We are not waiting for the world to solve Africa’s problems. Global AI research is advancing fast. Most of it is built for Western markets, Western data, and Western challenges.
Zimbabwe deserves better. Africa deserves better. The Orix AI Research and Innovation Lab exists to build it.
What we do
We conduct applied AI research focused on Zimbabwe’s most pressing challenges. We develop prototypes. We test solutions in real conditions. We build intellectual property that belongs to Africa.
Our research is not theoretical. It is practical, grounded, and designed to deliver measurable impact. We focus on five areas.
Agriculture. Crop disease detection, yield prediction, and precision farming using AI tools accessible to Zimbabwean farmers.
Finance. Fraud detection, credit scoring models, and financial inclusion solutions built for Zimbabwe’s formal and informal markets.
Healthcare. Diagnostic support, patient management, and supply chain optimisation for Zimbabwe’s health system.
Public service. AI for service delivery, resource allocation, and citizen engagement across government.
Local languages. Natural Language Processing for Shona, Ndebele, and other African languages. AI that speaks Zimbabwe’s languages.
Why this research matters
Zimbabwe’s National AI Strategy runs from 2026 to 2030. It prioritises talent, infrastructure, ethics, and global competitiveness.
That strategy needs research to back it up. It needs IP developed on Zimbabwean soil, using Zimbabwean data, by Zimbabwean minds.
That is exactly what we are building.
Our research partnerships
We collaborate with the Tgs College and regional research institutions. We work with government bodies. We engage international academic partners and development finance institutions.
We do not conduct research in isolation. We build an ecosystem around every project.
